Our Music of the Month selection for June 2022
Amélia Muge - Amélias
I have always been fascinated by the choral songs, their sense of community, their rhythmic and harmonic potential, their breathing together and their contribution to the reinforcement of all kinds of collective bonds.
When I was a child in Mozambique, I and my sister (another voice that I gradually discovered along with mine) used to go to a mirador, where the nannies of several children gathered daily, enjoying their rhythmic singings in the Ronga language.
It was in these singings that I first experienced a feeling of plurality, of a bigger belonging, where dancing and lullabying were the foundations of that common breathing. At home, I was nurtured on our traditional heritage, but also listened to enormously diverse music. Such experiences, with their deep roots, introduced me to this plurality of voices. - Amélia Muge
Amélias is a remarkable exploration of the human voice, rooted in the totality of human history rather than a specific culture or place. It is also a work of art, with not only lyrical and vocal treasures, but with beautiful illustrations by Muge, printed on excellent art paper as a series of cards for each song.
I am pleased to be able to offer you this recording as our July, 2022 Music of the Month selection. - CF
